Shawn rolled over the next morning to an empty space in bed. Diesel was curled up on the pillow next to him, his yellow eyes blinking at him.

“Morning, Diesel,” Shawn said as he stretched. “So where’s E.T.?”

“I’ll never understand why you call me that,” Ziang said from the couch. “I look nothing like that stupid character.”

Shawn winked at the kitten as he made his way to the bathroom. Of course Ziang didn’t look like that character. He called him that to needle the big alien.

“What are you doing?” Shawn asked after he came out of the bathroom. He slipped on his jeans and walked barefoot into the kitchenette to fix coffee.

“I believe you call it channel surfing.”

“Must be nothing on TV. I’ll get my laptop for you. That’s good for wasting a few hours. I could also bring down my old Xbox and let you shoot a few aliens.”

“I’m always up for killing something.”

Shawn rolled his eyes as the coffee perked. Ziang won that round.

“I was thinking I’d do some yard work—just in case anyone’s watching the area—then do some chores upstairs. I need to wash clothes anyway. ”

“I was going to tell you when you got up that you needed to carry on just like normal. Don’t draw attention to yourself by changing your habits all of a sudden.”

“I know. I just hate leaving you down here all alone. It’s got to be boring.” Shawn fixed his coffee and joined Ziang on the couch. “I’d hate being stuck down here all the time.”

“It’s not that bad. For a few days I can relax and not worry about my usual responsibilities, and I can spend time with you. If it gets to be too bad, I can hunt—I mean play—with the kitten.”

“Just for that, I hope he takes a chunk out of your alien hide.”

Ziang laughed as he patted the couch. Diesel jumped up next to him, turned around a few times, then lay down next to Ziang. “My alien hide, as you call it, is very tough. Most of your bullets wouldn’t penetrate.”

“Really? That’s… beneficial, I’m sure. Besides, Diesel is more likely to love you to death anyway. He likes you.”

“And I like him, even though he’s going to cause my crew to wonder what’s happened to me.”

“What do you mean?”

“He’s cute and cuddly.”

“Well, God forbid. You can blame me for having the cat with us. He’s mine and I’m not leaving here without him. And you do know that domesticated animals still have the inbred instinct to hunt and kill, right?”

“Wait a minute.” Ziang jerked around to face Shawn. “Are you saying you’ll come with me willingly?”

Shawn stared off in the distance at a point only he could see. “Yes,” he sighed. “The sad fact is I have no life, Ziang. No family that wants me, no friends, no home that’s mine, no job really… no one of any meaning in my life. Well, outside of Diesel and how sad is that?”

“I want you.”

“Yeah, you do, don’t you?” Shawn touched Ziang’s jaw with his fingertips.
